🍩 Why Make Homemade Donuts?

  • Freshness: Hot, just-fried donuts can’t be beat.
  • Customization: Glaze, chocolate, sprinkles, powdered sugar—your call.
  • Fun to make: A great weekend activity for the whole family.
  • Surprisingly simple: Just a few pantry ingredients and a bit of patience.

🧂 Ingredients for Classic Fried Donuts

For the dough:

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 3/4 cup warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for rolling)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

For coating or topping (optional):

  • Powdered sugar
  • Cinnamon sugar
  • Vanilla glaze (1 cup powdered sugar + 2–3 tablespoons milk + 1/2 tsp vanilla)
  • Chocolate glaze (1 cup powdered sugar + 2 tablespoons cocoa powder + 2–3 tablespoons milk)

🧑‍🍳 Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Stir in the yeast and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy. If it doesn’t foam, your yeast may be inactive—start over with fresh yeast.

2. Make the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the yeast mixture, melted butter, egg, and salt. Add the flour gradually, mixing until a soft dough forms.

Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

3. Shape the Donuts

Punch down the dough and roll it out to about 1/2-inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters (one large, one small) to cut out donuts and holes. Reroll scraps as needed.

Place the cut donuts on a floured surface or parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover loosely and let them rise again for 30 minutes.

4. Heat the Oil

Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large, heavy pot to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature—it’s key for even frying.

5. Fry the Donuts

Carefully place 2–3 donuts at a time into the hot oil. Fry for about 1 minute per side or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel-lined tray.

Repeat with the remaining donuts and holes.
