If you’re looking for a unique twist on traditional bread, the Buttery Layered Bread might just be the perfect recipe to try. This soft, flaky, and buttery bread offers a rich flavor profile that will have everyone asking for the recipe.
Ingredients
For the dough:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F or 43°C)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons warm water
For the buttery layers:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional for added flavor)
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs (rosemary, thyme, or parsley work well)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for a sweet touch) or 1 tablespoon salt (for a savory version)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
- In a large bowl, mix the warm milk, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir to dissolve the sugar and let it sit for about 5–10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This process activates the yeast.
- Add the melted butter, egg, and salt into the mixture. Stir until the ingredients are well combined.
- Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing with a wooden spoon or spatula until a dough starts to form. Once the dough begins to come together, transfer it onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, covering it with a clean cloth. Allow it to rise for 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
Step 2: Prepare the Buttery Filling
- While the dough is rising, prepare the butter mixture by combining the softened butter with your choice of garlic powder and fresh herbs (if desired). You can also opt for a sweet variation by adding sugar to the butter mixture instead.
- Mix until smooth and well incorporated. Set the buttery filling aside.
Step 3: Shape the Bread
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface.
- Roll the dough into a large rectangle, about 12 x 18 inches in size. Spread the buttery filling evenly over the dough, making sure to cover every corner. You can use a spatula to help spread the butter smoothly.
- Carefully cut the dough into strips, around 1-2 inches wide, then stack the strips on top of each other. You’ll end up with a stack of dough squares.
- Place the stacked dough into a greased loaf pan, standing up like a “vertical” layer cake.
