### Step 1: Check the Care Label

The first thing to do before cleaning your pillows is to check the care label. Different types of pillows—such as memory foam, down, and synthetic—may have different cleaning instructions. For example, down pillows require a more delicate cleaning process, while synthetic pillows can typically be cleaned in the washing machine.

If your pillows are machine washable (most synthetic and cotton ones are), you can proceed with the steps below. However, if your pillows are made of materials like memory foam, you may need to spot clean them instead of submerging them in water.

### Step 2: Remove Pillowcases and Check for Stains

Start by removing the pillowcases from your pillows. Take a look at the pillows themselves to check for any visible stains. If you find stains, you can pre-treat them before washing by applying a paste made of baking soda and water.

To create the paste, mix about 3 tablespoons of baking soda with a small amount of water until it forms a thick paste. Apply the paste to the stained areas and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Baking soda helps lift stains and neutralize odors, making it a fantastic natural cleaning agent.

### Step 3: Wash the Pillows in the Washing Machine

Now, you’re ready to wash the pillows. Most cotton and synthetic pillows can be cleaned in the washing machine, but make sure to wash two pillows at the same time to balance the load. Washing just one pillow can cause the washing machine to become unbalanced during the spin cycle.
