Here’s how to clean your refrigerator drain (and prevent water from leaking everywhere).

**Step 2: Locate the Drain Hole**

The drain hole is typically found at the back of the fridge or inside the freezer, depending on the design. In most refrigerators with an automatic defrost system, the hole is located under the evaporator coils, usually in the back wall of the fridge section.

If you have trouble locating the hole, check your refrigerator’s manual for specific details on where the drain is located.

**Step 3: Clean the Drain Hole**

Once you’ve found the drain, use a small brush (an old toothbrush works great!) to gently scrub around the area. Food particles and mold can easily accumulate around the drain, so scrubbing will help remove any visible buildup. If you notice stubborn debris, use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe the area clean.

**Step 4: Clear the Drain Line**

The next step is to clear the drain line, which can get clogged with food particles, mold, or other debris over time. You can do this in a few ways:

– **Use a Turkey Baster or Syringe**: Fill a turkey baster or a syringe with warm, soapy water (or a mixture of warm water and baking soda for added deodorizing power). Gently squirt the water into the drain hole to flush out any debris in the drain line.

– **Use a Long, Flexible Brush or Pipe Cleaner**: If the drain line seems blocked, you can gently push a flexible cleaning brush or pipe cleaner through the line to dislodge any blockages.

**Step 5: Flush the Drain with Warm Water**

Once the drain line is clear, use warm water to flush out any remaining debris. You can either pour warm water into the drain hole or continue using the turkey baster or syringe to inject the water into the drain. Repeat this process until the water flows freely and no more debris comes out.

**Step 6: Clean the Drip Pan**

Most refrigerators have a drip pan located underneath the appliance, where the water from the drain collects. It’s important to clean the drip pan, as stagnant water can cause odors or even mold growth.

Carefully slide the drip pan out from underneath the fridge and wipe it down with warm, soapy water. If there is any mold or mildew, sprinkle some baking soda on the pan and scrub it with a cloth. Once cleaned, dry the drip pan thoroughly before placing it back.

**Step 7: Dry the Area**

After you’ve cleaned both the drain and drip pan, use a towel to soak up any excess water inside the fridge. This will prevent additional moisture from causing problems, such as mold growth or damage to the fridge’s interior.
