Here’s How You Can Make an Amazing Shepherd’s Pie All in Your Slow Cooker

Shepherd’s pie is one of those cozy, comforting meals that hits all the right notes—savory meat, tender veggies, creamy mashed potatoes… what’s not to love? But if you’ve ever wished you could enjoy all that goodness without standing over the stove, stirring and watching the oven, we’ve got great news: you can make an incredible shepherd’s pie right in your slow cooker! 🙌

Whether you’re meal-prepping for the week, feeding a hungry crowd, or just want dinner to cook itself while you go about your day, this slow cooker version is a total game-changer. Let’s dig into how to do it.

🛒 Ingredients You’ll Need:

For the meat & veggie base:

  • 1 lb ground beef or ground lamb (traditional for shepherd’s pie)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn, green beans)
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1 tbsp flour or cornstarch (to thicken)

For the mashed potato topping:

  • 4-5 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1/2 cup shredded cheese (cheddar is amazing)

👩‍🍳 Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Brown the Meat (Optional but Recommended)

In a skillet, brown the ground meat with the diced onion and garlic. This step adds tons of flavor and helps render the fat. Drain any excess grease before moving on.

(Short on time? You can technically skip this step and add everything straight to the slow cooker—just be sure to stir it well and cook a little longer.)

2. Layer the Filling in the Slow Cooker

Add the browned meat mixture to the bottom of the slow cooker. Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, and frozen veggies. If you want the mixture thicker, sprinkle in some flour or cornstarch. Season well with salt and pepper.

3. Add the Mashed Potatoes

Boil the chopped potatoes until fork-tender (about 15 minutes), then mash them with butter, milk, salt, and pepper. You can also add shredded cheese for an extra creamy topping. Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the meat mixture in the slow cooker.

(Shortcut: You can also use pre-made mashed potatoes or even instant if you’re in a real pinch.)
