Homemade Glazed Donuts: A Deliciously Sweet Treat

There’s something undeniably comforting and satisfying about a fresh, warm donut. Whether enjoyed with a morning cup of coffee or as a sweet afternoon snack, homemade glazed donuts are a perfect indulgence. If you’ve ever dreamed of making your own donuts at home, you’re in luck! Making these delicious, melt-in-your-mouth donuts at home is easier than you think, and the result is sure to impress.

Here’s a simple, foolproof recipe for homemade glazed donuts that will have you baking (and eating!) these sweet treats in no time.

Ingredients:

For the Donuts:

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup melted unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the Glaze:

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup whole milk (or more, to adjust consistency)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions:

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

Start by activating your yeast. In a small bowl, combine the warm milk (make sure it’s not too hot to avoid killing the yeast) with the active dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5 minutes. The yeast should start to foam and bubble, indicating that it’s active and ready to use.

Step 2: Make the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture with the granulated sugar, melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir everything together until fully incorporated. Slowly add the flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough begins to form. You may need to use your hands to bring the dough together.

Step 3: Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. If it’s too sticky, you can add a little more flour, but be careful not to overdo it, as you want the dough to remain soft.

Step 4: Let the Dough Rise

Once your dough is kneaded, place it in a lightly greased bowl, covering it with a clean kitchen towel. Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

Step 5: Shape the Donuts

Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Roll the dough out on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness. Using a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters (one large and one small for the hole), cut out your donuts. If you don’t have a donut cutter, you can also use the lid of a jar to cut out the outer ring and a smaller cap for the hole in the middle.

Step 6: Heat the Oil

In a deep fryer or large pot, heat vegetable oil to about 350°F (175°C). You’ll need enough oil to submerge the donuts. Make sure to monitor the temperature closely to prevent overheating, which can result in burning the donuts.

Step 7: Fry the Donuts

Carefully place the donuts into the hot oil, a few at a time, and fry for about 1-2 minutes per side or until golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to remove the donuts from the oil, and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
