For the Meatballs (if making from scratch):
- 1 lb ground beef or turkey
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup grated onion or onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Or use 1 bag (about 32 oz) of frozen, fully-cooked meatballs
Instructions
- Make meatballs (optional): If making from scratch, combine all meatball ingredients in a bowl. Roll into 1-inch balls and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15–18 minutes, or until cooked through.
- Make the sauce: In a large skillet or saucepan, combine BBQ sauce, honey, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- Add meatballs: Add cooked (or thawed frozen) meatballs to the sauce. Stir gently to coat.
- Simmer: Cover and simmer on low for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until meatballs are hot and the sauce is thick and sticky.
- Serve: Garnish with chopped parsley or green onions. Serve as appetizers with toothpicks, or as a main dish with rice, mashed potatoes, or slider buns.
Tips & Variations
- Spicy version: Add more red pepper flakes or a splash of hot sauce.
- Crockpot option: Add meatballs and sauce to a slow cooker and heat on low for 2–3 hours.
- Make ahead: These meatballs can be prepped in advance and reheated — the flavors get even better!
- Use turkey or plant-based meatballs for a lighter version.
