Man, I’ve Been Doing It Wrong This Entire Time: Common Mistakes We All Make and How to Fix Them

We’ve all had those moments of realization when we find out that something we’ve been doing for years—something we thought was totally fine—was actually being done all wrong. Whether it’s cooking, cleaning, or simple daily habits, sometimes we only learn the right way to do things after countless attempts (or, let’s be real, failures). The good news is that these “Aha!” moments often come with a chance to learn, grow, and improve our routines. So, if you’re reading this and thinking, “Man, I’ve been doing it wrong this entire time,” don’t worry—you’re not alone! Here are some common mistakes many of us make, along with simple fixes that will make life just a little bit easier.

1. Cooking Pasta in Cold Water

How many times have you tossed pasta into a pot of cold water, then cranked up the heat and hoped for the best? Turns out, this is one of the most common cooking mistakes. The right way is to bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil before adding your pasta. Why? Boiling water helps the pasta cook evenly and prevents it from becoming gummy or sticky.

Fix It: Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a boil over high heat. Add a generous amount of salt for flavor (about 1–2 tablespoons per pound of pasta), then stir in your pasta. Let it cook according to the package instructions, but remember to taste test for doneness!

2. Overloading the Washing Machine

We’ve all been guilty of stuffing too much laundry into the washing machine to get it all done in one go. But here’s the thing: overloading your washer can actually prevent your clothes from getting clean and can strain your machine. Clothes need room to move around and get properly agitated.

Fix It: Aim to fill the washer to about ¾ of its capacity. This allows enough room for water and detergent to circulate properly. Plus, your clothes will have a better chance of coming out clean—and you won’t risk damaging your washer in the process.

3. Washing Meat Before Cooking

A common misconception is that washing meat before cooking helps remove bacteria or germs. However, this practice can actually do more harm than good. Rinsing raw meat can spread bacteria around your kitchen, leading to cross-contamination. The heat from cooking will kill harmful bacteria, so washing is unnecessary and potentially dangerous.

Fix It: Skip the washing and go straight to seasoning and cooking. Make sure to handle the meat with clean hands, and disinfect surfaces afterward. Your meat will cook just fine without a rinse!

4. Storing Your Fruits and Vegetables Together

If you’ve been storing your fruits and vegetables together in the same drawer, you might be inadvertently speeding up the ripening process for some of your produce. Many fruits release ethylene gas, which can cause vegetables to spoil faster.

Fix It: Store fruits and vegetables separately, especially those that are particularly sensitive to ethylene, like leafy greens, broccoli, and cucumbers. Apples, bananas, and avocados are examples of fruits that release the gas, so give them their own space.
