Sweet & Savory French Toast

#### For the Sweet Version:
– 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
– Maple syrup or honey
– Powdered sugar (for dusting)
– Fresh fruit (berries, bananas, or strawberries)
– Whipped cream (optional)

#### Optional Fillings and Add-ins:
– Caramelized onions
– Mushrooms (for savory)
– Nutella or peanut butter (for sweet)
– Nut or granola (for extra crunch)

### Directions:

#### 1. **Prepare the Egg Mixture**:
In a large mixing bowl, crack the eggs and whisk them together with the milk, sugar (if making the sweet version), cinnamon, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Make sure the mixture is smooth and well combined.

#### 2. **Soak the Bread**:
Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a tablespoon of butter or oil. While the pan is heating, slice the bread into thick pieces, about 1 inch thick. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are evenly coated but not too soggy.

For the savory version, you can skip the sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla, and just season the mixture with a pinch of salt and pepper.

#### 3. **Cook the French Toast**:
Place the soaked bread slices onto the hot skillet. Allow the bread to cook for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until the exterior is golden brown and crispy. Flip carefully to avoid the bread falling apart.

For a crispier exterior, you can add an extra pat of butter to the pan before flipping the bread.

#### 4. **Assemble the Sweet Version**:
Once your French toast is cooked, transfer it to a plate and add your favorite sweet toppings. Drizzle with maple syrup or honey, dust with powdered sugar, and top with fresh fruit and whipped cream. You can also sprinkle a little extra cinnamon or nutmeg for added flavor.

#### 5. **Assemble the Savory Version**:
For the savory French toast, add the cheese to the top of the French toast as it’s cooking so it can melt slightly. You can also add some sautéed spinach or caramelized onions for added flavor. For an extra savory touch, top the toast with crispy bacon, sausage, or any other protein of your choice. Garnish with fresh herbs like thyme, rosemary, or chives.

6. **Serve and Enjoy**:
Once you’ve assembled your French toast, serve immediately while it’s warm and crispy. Pair it with your favorite beverages, such as coffee, juice, or a mimosa for brunch, or enjoy it on its own for a comforting meal.
