We Love Making Batches of This and Handing Them Out as Gifts — Pure Deliciousness in a Jar! 🍯🎁
There’s something incredibly heartwarming about giving a homemade gift — especially when it’s something that tastes as good as it looks. If you’ve been searching for a go-to edible gift that’s simple to make, endlessly customizable, and guaranteed to impress, look no further. This recipe is our family favorite: Homemade Vanilla Cinnamon Apple Butter. It’s sweet, spiced, smooth, and spreads like a dream. And yes — it’s pure deliciousness in a jar.
🍎 What Is Apple Butter?
Despite the name, apple butter doesn’t actually contain any butter. It’s a thick, rich spread made by slow-cooking apples with sugar and spices until it becomes caramelized and silky smooth. Think of it as a cross between applesauce and jam, but with deeper, more concentrated flavor.
📝 Ingredients (Makes about 4–6 small jars):
- 5 lbs of apples (we love using a mix of sweet and tart, like Fuji and Granny Smith)
- 1 ½ cups brown sugar
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground cloves
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Optional: juice of 1 lemon for added brightness
👩🍳 Directions:
- Peel, core, and slice the apples. Toss them into a slow cooker.
- Add brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, salt, and lemon juice (if using). Give it all a good stir.
- Cover and cook on low for 10 hours, stirring occasionally. The apples will break down into a deep golden, spiced mixture.
- Add the vanilla extract. Use an immersion blender (or transfer to a blender in batches) to puree until ultra smooth.
- Cook uncovered for another 1 hour on low to thicken even more, if needed.
- Spoon into sterilized jars and seal tightly. Let cool before storing in the fridge (lasts up to 2 weeks), or process in a water bath canner for longer shelf life.
