DIY Homemade Calcium Magnesium Supplement Recipe Using Eggshells
When it comes to supporting bone health and overall wellness, calcium and magnesium are two essential minerals that play a crucial role. While you can find these minerals in various supplements on the market, did you know that you can make your own DIY homemade calcium magnesium supplement using something as simple as eggshells? This natural and eco-friendly alternative not only helps you save money but also ensures you’re consuming a supplement that’s free from fillers and artificial additives. Here’s how to create your own DIY calcium magnesium supplement using eggshells.
Why Eggshells for Calcium and Magnesium?
Eggshells are made up of over 90% calcium carbonate, which is an easily absorbed form of calcium. They also contain other beneficial minerals, including magnesium, phosphorus, and trace minerals like zinc, copper, and manganese. This makes eggshells a great source for a DIY calcium magnesium supplement that’s both natural and effective.
Calcium is vital for maintaining strong bones and teeth, regulating blood pressure, and supporting proper muscle function. Magnesium, on the other hand, plays a role in muscle and nerve function, regulating blood sugar levels, and supporting a healthy immune system. Combining these two minerals in a supplement can help address deficiencies and promote overall health.
What You’ll Need:
- 5-6 clean eggshells (free-range, organic eggs are ideal)
- A clean oven or a baking sheet
- A mortar and pestle or a high-speed blender/food processor
- An airtight container for storage
- Optional: Magnesium powder or Epsom salt (for adding extra magnesium)
Step-by-Step Guide:
Step 1: Collect and Clean the Eggshells
Start by collecting clean eggshells from your kitchen. Be sure to thoroughly rinse the eggshells to remove any residual egg white or membrane inside. You can either use eggshells from eggs you’ve already used or save eggshells over time and store them in the fridge until you’re ready to use them.
Step 2: Dry the Eggshells
Place the cleaned eggshells on a baking sheet and put them in an oven at 200°F (93°C) for about 10-15 minutes. This will ensure that the eggshells are fully dry and free from any bacteria. Allow the eggshells to cool down after baking.
Step 3: Crush the Eggshells
Once the eggshells are completely cooled, it’s time to crush them into a fine powder. You can do this by using a mortar and pestle, which is a more traditional method, or a high-speed blender/food processor for a quicker approach. Make sure the powder is as fine as possible to ensure that it’s easily digestible when consumed.
Step 4: Optional: Add Magnesium
While eggshells already contain some magnesium, you may want to increase the magnesium content for a more balanced supplement. To do so, you can add magnesium powder to the eggshell powder. Alternatively, you can also use Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) as a source of magnesium. Just be sure to follow the recommended dosage instructions for magnesium.
