What is Baklava?
Baklava is a traditional Greek and Middle Eastern dessert made with layers of thin, crispy phyllo dough, rich nuts (typically pistachios, walnuts, or almonds), and a sweet syrup. The layers are baked until golden brown and then soaked in a sticky-sweet syrup made of honey, sugar, and a splash of lemon or rose water. While it’s a bit of a labor-intensive dessert, the end result is nothing short of spectacular.
However, for those who prefer a more bite-sized, easy-to-serve version, Baklava Bites offer the perfect alternative. These mini delights pack the same rich flavors of the original but in a more accessible, fun form.

Ingredients:
For the Baklava Bites:
- 1 package of phyllo dough (about 20 sheets, thawed)
- 1 1/2 cups mixed nuts (such as pistachios, walnuts, almonds, or a combination)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (optional, depending on sweetness preference)
For the Syrup:
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
Directions:
Step 1: Prepare the Nuts
Start by finely chopping your choice of mixed nuts. Traditional baklava typically uses a mixture of walnuts and pistachios, but feel free to use your favorites! Combine the chopped nuts with ground cinnamon and set them aside.
Step 2: Layer the Phyllo Dough
Preheat your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Next, lay one sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface. Using a pastry brush, lightly brush it with melted butter. Place another sheet of phyllo dough on top, and brush with more melted butter. Repeat this process until you have 6 layers of phyllo dough.
Step 3: Add the Nut Filling
After layering your dough, sprinkle a thin, even layer of the nut mixture onto the phyllo dough. You donโt need too muchโjust enough to create a satisfying crunch in each bite!
Step 4: Fold and Cut
Fold the phyllo dough over the nut mixture to create a small rectangle or square. Be sure to fold tightly so that the nuts are secured inside. Using a sharp knife, cut the layered dough into small squares or rectangles, the size of your desired bite-sized pieces.
