Baked Mozzarella in Carrozza: A Healthier Twist on an Italian Classic

If you’re craving gooey, golden comfort food with an Italian flair, look no further than Mozzarella in Carrozza—literally translated as “mozzarella in a carriage.” Traditionally pan-fried, this decadent sandwich features melted mozzarella cheese encased between slices of bread, dipped in egg, and fried until crisp. But today, we’re giving this classic a lighter, oven-baked makeover that’s just as satisfying, with less oil and a bit more balance.

Perfect as a snack, appetizer, or light meal, this baked version still delivers that warm, cheesy center and crispy outer texture—without the need for a frying pan.

🧀 What Is Mozzarella in Carrozza?

Mozzarella in Carrozza originated in Southern Italy, particularly around Naples, as a way to use up stale bread and leftover mozzarella. It’s often compared to a grilled cheese sandwich, but it has a unique Italian twist—dipped in a rich egg wash and sometimes coated with breadcrumbs for an extra-crispy crust.

By baking it instead of frying, you can cut down on oil without sacrificing flavor or texture.
