These rolls are soft, slightly sweet, and filled with layers of melted chocolate that create an irresistible treat for anyone with a sweet tooth.

In this recipe, you’ll learn how to make these delightful chocolate-filled rolls from scratch. With a little patience and a few simple ingredients, you can create an indulgent dessert or breakfast that everyone will love.

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Chocolate Filling:

  • 1/2 cup semisweet or milk chocolate chips (or a chopped chocolate bar)
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (optional, for extra sweetness)
  • A pinch of salt

For the Glaze (Optional):

  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

To start, place the warm milk in a small bowl and sprinkle the active dry yeast and sugar over the top. Stir gently to combine, then let the mixture sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This step is crucial for activating the yeast, which will make your rolls rise and become fluffy.

Step 2: Prepare the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the melted butter, salt, egg, and vanilla extract. Once the yeast mixture is frothy, pour it into the bowl with the wet ingredients. Stir to combine.

Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a dough starts to form. Once the dough comes together, transfer it to a floured surface and knead for about 5–7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough feels too sticky, add a little more flour, but be careful not to add too much, as this can make the rolls dense.

Step 3: Let the Dough Rise

Form the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly greased bowl. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for about 1–1.5 hours, or until the dough has doubled in size. This step allows the dough to develop flavor and texture, making the rolls light and fluffy.

Step 4: Make the Chocolate Filling

While the dough is rising, prepare the chocolate filling. In a medium bowl, combine the chocolate chips (or chopped chocolate), cocoa powder, butter, powdered sugar (if using), and a pinch of salt. Mix until smooth and well combined. The mixture should be thick but spreadable. If it’s too thick, you can microwave it for a few seconds to loosen it up.

Step 5: Roll Out the Dough

Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down gently to release the air bubbles. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and roll it out into a rectangle that is about 12 inches by 18 inches. Try to make the dough as even as possible, so the rolls bake uniformly.

Step 6: Add the Chocolate Filling

Spread the chocolate filling evenly over the surface of the dough, leaving a small border along the edges. Be generous with the filling, as it will melt and create a gooey, delicious center for each roll.
