Fluffy Homemade Buns: The Perfect Addition to Any Meal
If you’ve ever bitten into a soft, fluffy homemade bun, you know just how comforting and satisfying they can be. Whether you’re making a batch for sandwiches, burgers, or simply enjoying them fresh out of the oven with a smear of butter, these homemade buns are guaranteed to elevate any meal. In this article, we’ll walk you through the easy steps to create fluffy, tender buns that will make your kitchen smell incredible.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 5 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for kneading)
- 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)
- 2 tablespoons water (for egg wash, optional)
Instructions:
1. Activate the Yeast:
Start by activating the yeast. In a large mixing bowl, pour in the warm milk and add the sugar. Stir to dissolve, then sprinkle the yeast over the milk mixture. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy. If the mixture doesn’t foam up, the yeast might be expired, and you should start again with fresh yeast.
2. Prepare the Dough:
Once the yeast is activated, add the melted butter and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, stirring with a wooden spoon or your hands as you go. The dough will begin to come together into a sticky mass.
3. Knead the Dough:
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead it for about 8-10 minutes, adding more flour as necessary, until the dough is smooth, elastic, and no longer sticky. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook for this step. Kneading helps to develop the gluten, which contributes to the fluffy texture of the buns.
4. First Rise:
Once the dough is ready, place it into a lightly greased bowl, covering it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free area for about 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size. This is the perfect time to prepare your baking sheet or pans.
5. Shape the Buns:
After the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release the air. Turn it out onto a floured surface and divide it into 12 equal portions (for standard-size buns). Shape each portion into a smooth ball by tucking the edges under, creating a round, tight surface. Arrange the buns on a greased baking sheet or in a greased 9×13-inch baking pan, leaving a little space between each one.
6. Second Rise:
Cover the shaped buns with a towel and allow them to rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until they’ve puffed up and are touching each other. This second rise ensures the buns are light and airy.
7. Prepare the Egg Wash:
For a beautiful golden finish, whisk together the egg and 2 tablespoons of water. Brush this egg wash over the tops of the buns just before baking.
