Ingredients:

For the Chicken Stew:

  • 1 whole chicken (about 3-4 pounds), cut into parts
  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon butter (optional, for richness)

For the Dumplings:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Chicken Stew:

Start by placing the chicken pieces into a large pot or Dutch oven. Add the chicken broth, carrots, celery, onion, and garlic to the pot. Stir in the dried thyme and parsley. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Bring everything to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 45 minutes to an hour. This gives the chicken time to cook through and the vegetables to become tender. The chicken will also release its natural flavors into the broth, making for a rich and comforting base for the dumplings.

Once the chicken is fully cooked, remove the chicken pieces from the pot and let them cool for a few minutes. After that, shred the chicken and return it to the pot. For extra richness, you can stir in a tablespoon of butter at this point (totally optional, but it adds a lovely touch).

2. Make the Dumplings:

While the chicken stew is simmering, it’s time to prepare the dumplings. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. In another small bowl, whisk together the milk, melted butter, and egg. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until everything is combined into a thick batter.

3. Cook the Dumplings:

Once your chicken stew is ready, it’s time to add the dumplings! Using a spoon, drop spoonfuls of the dumpling batter into the simmering stew. Be sure not to overcrowd them—leave a little space between each dumpling. Cover the pot with a lid and let the dumplings steam for about 15-20 minutes. Don’t lift the lid during this time, as the steam is essential for cookin
